DESCRIPTION
With a spirited and humorous voice, Lenore Tolegian Hughes has written a powerful coming of age novel, "Cups of Fortune," which recounts the early life of an Armenian-American girl, named Azad, growing up in 1950s Los Angeles. Azad's story begins with discoveries about her family's poignant past which lead her to a deeper appreciation of the memorable characters who inhabit her world and give her important insights into her own identity. Her reflections are interwoven with the fortunes told by her beloved immigrant grandmother who foretells the future by reading the grounds of Armenian coffee cups, and for whom the preparation and serving of food in all its mouth-watering, old-world varieties, is the ultimate expression of love. "Cups of Fortune" will make every reader long to eat well, laugh out loud, celebrate life, and predict the future in their own cups of coffee.

Not knowing what to expect, I found this entertaining book by this first time novelist a pleasure to read. I knew nothing of Armenian/American culture. In several instances, I found myself laughing out loud at the Los Angeles based protagonist's longing to become a "true" American (with blond hair preferred.)Through coffee grounds read in a succession of empty cups (an Armenian tradition), the author describes an Armenian family's process of assimilation with love and gentle humor. Mama Jahn, the protagonist's beloved grandmother, plays a starring role. The reputed cook and baker peppers her speech with Armenian words, and loads up her table until it fairly sags under the weight of Armenian family specialties.Sample chapter titles include:CH.6: The Serpent's Cup. To be hungry is better than to be in debt.CH. 10: The Cup of Fear. What the eye truly sees, the heart never forgets.CH:13: The Cousin's Cup. You spit on the camel or the camel spits on you! This book should resonate with Los Angeles' Armenian American community and beyond.
